More than 90% of smartphone owners keep the device within three feet of their body 24 hours a day, Anmol Madan, PhD, told a recent University of Pennsylvania Connected Health Symposium. That fact is the basis of the Ginger.io system that collects and analyzes continuous phone, text, GPS and accelerometer data patterns relevant to chronic health conditions. For instance, the system might note that a user interacted with 26% fewer people in the last few days or made 19% fewer trips outside the home. Or, that a user's phone and movements went quiet all night or that he or she sent 18 text messages at 3:30 a.m. Ginger.io is a spinoff of the MIT Media Lab.
