Although initially developed to provide teledermatological services to underserved populations, the AccessDerm smartphone app is drawing increasing interest as a health care tool of potentially broader use. Co-developed by a University of Pennsylvania team and the Academy of Dermatology, the program enables primary care physicians to use their own smartphones to take and submit HIPAA-secure photos and clinical data to teams of remote dermatologists who return consults within five hours. Penn Dermatologist Carrie Kovarik demonstrates and explains the system at a recent Connected Health Symposium in Philadelphia.
