How Telemedicine Impacts ICU Outcomes
eICU programs, which use two-way video connections to link multiple individual intensive care units with a remote team of intensivist physicians, have had a "profound" effect on patient care and outcomes in those facilities, according to Benjamin Kohl, MD. Speaking at a University of Pennsylvania Connected Health Symposium, Kohl, director of Penn's E-Lert eICU program, told the audience that the digitally-connected approach to managing ICUs has significantly decreased mortality, length of stay and bloodstream-related infections in studied ICUs. His team remotely enhances daily operations in four different hospital ICUs in Philadelphia.
