Despite the fact that stroke is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S., vast expanses of the country lack one-hour access to neurologists who specialize in stroke care. But new forms of telemedicine in facilities such as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) are beginning to bridge this distance. At the recent Connected Health Symposium, HUP neurologist Michael Mullen explained how the PennNeuroRescue telemedicine service uses digital connections to provide real-time stroke consults to the emergency rooms of three distant hospitals.
