Supermarkets and the War on Obesity
PHILADEPHIA -- Although school lunches and fast-food menus have been among the highest-profile topics in the obesity debate, supermarkets are also coming into sharper focus. University of Pennsylvania professor Karen Glanz's new paper in the Journal of Preventive Medicine outlines the potential low-key strategies that supermarket chains and corner grocery stores can use to "nudge" consumers toward healthier purchases. Meanwhile, she leads a team conducting a second study in several Philadelphia supermarkets where these methods are being instituted and monitored.
